CHAVIN OF HUANTAR

An exceptional trip to Ancash, by the coast, waits for the travellers who wish to understand how he is that approximately 4,700 years ago important centers arose from sedentary life in small valleys, surrounded by one by the driest deserts of the planet, as well as the one that without doubt is one of the first cultural phenomena properly deserving of the term civilization in America, Chavín de Huántar. In order to arrive at this wonder we will have to initiate our trip arriving

PORTICO OF THE FALCONIDAS

first a Huaraz (3,050 msnm), capital of the Ancash region, located to 400 km of Lima and 200 of the coast (Paramonga), at which it is arrived by an excellent asphalt road. The ideal months to cross the zone are of June to August.

The ceremonial center of Chavin of Huantar
The trip towards the archaeological complex of Chavin of Huantar implies a scale in Huaraz, capital of Ancash, region that offers interesting circuits of ecological tourism, of adventure and andinismo.

The complex of Chavin of Huantar is located in the high valley of Mosna (3,150 msnm), and halfway locates between the coast and the forest, separated of them by two high mountain ranges. Today Chavín de Huántar is a town hidden in a small valley to 3,177 msnm, on the Eastern foot of the White Mountain range. This town partially covers archaeological rest with an extension of 40 you have, which are an important ceremonial center that it dates from the first millenium ac and maintained his fame until centuries XVI and XVII. In years twenty, the eminent Peruvian archaeologist Julio C. Tello recognized his fundamental importance for the history of Peru and old America, turning it key piece for his vision of the origin of the culture in old Peru.

CABEZA CLAVA

It has been possible to determine that the complex has two well leaned temples defined; one was the old Temple, that was constructed second millenium A.C. Tiene probably by the end of forms of U, in the central part appears the access to a cruciform gallery, in whose center the impressive image of a divinity is nailed, the Lanzón, the same one that is a hybrid representation with elements of serpents, felines and humans. Underneath galeria and of the stairs of access a channel without final beginning runs nor known, that takes us seat to a sunk to circulate.

This seat takes to tablets decorated with felines in pairs and mythical beings in procession towards the access. In its center probably the call Obelisco Tello was elevated now, that represents the cosmos in form of dragoons with allusive reasons the cycle for the water. It could also have served like solar clock. The iconography of the Obelisco Tello allows to glimpse the religious doctrine Chavín. In him we appreciated two mythical lizards (crocodiles with bird tail), of opposed sexes, united in the sexual act contranatura, interchanging physiological flows that emanate of their sexual mouths, noses and organs, to way of serpents. The back legs of the deities are located underneath the level of the ground, whereas the advantages in the sky. Its sides the jaguar represents the masculine deity and the fishing eagle to the feminine one, suggesting the distribution of the power in both bordering of the universe (of that time), the forest and the sea. The Obelisco Tello is a little smaller than the Lanzon. It measures 2.52 ms of height and 32 cm wide.

In the platform of the seat two galleries existed, one that contained great amount of used marine shells in the cult, and another call the líticos Gallery of the Offerings, that kept hundreds from vasijas, objects and rest of human beings and burned animals.

Another important detail was the Heads You nail, those that were stone heads which they adorned the outer facade of the complex Chavín de Huántar. At the moment it is left one in his place of origin single. The archaeologists have called them thus because the nape of the neck crosses the wall as if it was a nail. These heads you nail are anthropomorphous, but with felinoides attributes. They appear with the open eyes and the closed mouth.

These vestiges demonstrate the existence of ceremonies and the great root and is present at of the religion in the settler of the time. This old temple was dedicated to the cult of the water through oráculo supraregional, to that the settlers of the mountain range and the norcentral and central coast went. .

The New Temple is an extension of the right wing of the Old Temple, called the Castle. He is much more great that the old one, since it continues through platforms and it culminates in a great sunk seat quadrangular. All the platforms counted on líticas stairs. Lamentably it is known little of the function of this complex, since we ignored the character of the main divinity and the ritual operation.

The famous Raimondi Wake that represents the God of the Walking sticks (prototype of later images, like that in the Cover of the Sun of the Tiahuanaco culture, frequently identified with the God Viracocha), but one does not know its original location and its context. It was thus baptized in tribute to the naturalist and Italian geographer Antonio Raimondi, who took to Lima for his study and conservation to it. This was carved in granite stone, in rectangular form of laja, and it measures 1.98 ms of height by 74 cm wide and 17 cm in thickness. .

Chavin of Huantar never was isolated nor solitary. One knows rather that it had contact with other cultures that occupied diverse zones, sometimes very distant. This took to Julio C. Tello to show that Chavín was the cradle of the Peruvian and first civilization from which the later cultures of our country were derived. Nevertheless, later investigations indicated that Chavín was not the cradle itself, but one of the most important points of our civilization, since had to do with all the later cultures.

Chavín had contacts demonstrated with a religious tradition seated in the North part of the coast and the mountain range del Peru. In recent excavations this relation was demonstrated fehacientemente, when being in the environs of the locality of Puémape, in Cajamarca, Chavín ceramics next to those of the Cupisnique culture.

The presence of the Chavín culture also stands out in the high forest, as it is possible to be appreciated in the ceramics located in the Amazon region.
